Day 17: Glacier National Park & Logan Pass (Pt. 2)

We decided to get out at Logan Pass, the highest point of the road, to see if we could get more information about what we’d be seeing next. We walked around to the backside of the center and I remembered being here with my family years ago. There was a wooden walking path within sight, so we started towards it. Turns out, we were on the Hidden Lake Nature Trail (3 miles out and back). We saw a deer walking on the trail and followed her for a bit. A young calf came out of the woods shortly after. Eventually, the wood ended and we were walking in snow. Almost immediately, we began seeing mountain goats left and right. They were walking right in front of us, laying 15 feet off the trail, drinking from small ponds and climbing rocks. It was awesome. We were so intrigued by what we saw, we just kept walking. We came to an overlook, and there stood a female mountain goat, on a ledge, with a spectacular view behind her. You couldn’t have asked for a better pose. (Unfortunately, the sun is very harsh in several of these photos. I desperately need to invest in a sun screen for my camera lenses. Even with filters, the glare killed many of my photographs from this hike.)

This little guy was quite interested in my camera lens.

The hike was well worth our time; beautiful sights and lots of animals. Then, as we were driving out of the Visitor Center, we saw several bighorn sheep coming down the mountain, right in front of us. They walked within 8 feet of Andrew’s truck and I could sense his weariness. (We had just watched a video on animals ramming into cars!) Luckily, they passed without taking any frustration out on his truck. Needless to say, our stop at Logan Pass was a good decision!

About this time, Andrew and I had worked up quite the appetite. We had hiked almost 10 miles today and were ready for dinner. We drove until we reached the Sun Point picnic area. It was about to get dark and we didn’t want to clean dishes after the sun went down. Once we finished, we climbed a short .2 mile trail to an overlook near our picnic area and watched the sun creep behind the mountains.

We stopped at St. Mary’s Lake to get a photograph of the tiny famous island that sits in the middle of it, then headed out of the park to look for a place to camp for the night. We ended up behind the St. Mary’s Lake Lodge. We walked around the gift stores for a few minutes and went into the grocery store for a late night treat, then headed to bed for the night.
